In the Branchburg Club she has initiated the Student of the Month Vocational Service Project, been on the Board for the past 9 years, and started the Women’s Health Forum/Basket BINGO fundraiser. Julie Ann has been awarded the Paul Harris Recognition by both her club and District 7510, and was given the club service award. Joseph M. (Joe) Scandariato, Sr., 2007-2008 District Governor Elect
Joe has been a Rotarian since 1983 in the Rotary Club of Hamilton Township. He is a Past President (2001-2002.) He has served as Club Director, Club Chaplain, Club Membership Chair, Club Sgt. At Arms, and District Sgt. At Arms. He has been District Membership Chair for 4 years and is the first District Membership Director established by Gov. Andy Calamaras. Joe has attended the Rotary Leadership Institute and has lectured on Membership at every PETS I & II and District Assembly for the last 4 years. He is a Paul Harris Fellow and recipient of the Matty Mathewson Award for the Best Rotarian in the District in 2005-2006. He has also been involved in scouting as a scout and a volunteer leader for 37 years and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. His troop’s list of Eagle Scouts consistently represented 20% of the troop membership (national average has been between 2-4%.)
Born and raised in New York City, the son of Italian immigrants, and product of the NYC Public School system, he spent a number of years in a Franciscan monastery and finished his education at Seton Hall University with degrees in Philosophy and Psychology. He has lived in New Jersey since 1956. He spent 3 years in the military as a research meteorologist, while he also created and hosted a TV and Radio Weather Show and conducted a church choir. Upon returning to civilian life he became the regional (8 states) director for a start up life insurance company until he started his own business He finds the dedication and ethics of Rotary quite similar to those in the monastery, in his church and in scouting.
Joe has recently (2005) closed his kitchen cabinet design and installation business and has embarked on a career involving Internet sales of nutritional products and Internet web site development and advertising.
Joe is married to the ever patient Marie since 1962 and they are the proud parents of 3 wonderful children, Mark, Joseph, Jr., (an Eagle Scout) and Maria; and the proud grandparents of Paul, Nick and Lara Scandariato. They enjoy visiting them in Chicago, IL, and Cary, NC, and they have visited Rotary Clubs all over the US, parts of Europe, and in the Himalayan Mountains of India.
Alexander Cauwels, 2007-2008 District Governor Nominee
Alexander Cauwels, a native of Belgium, came to The United States of America
in August 1998. He started a business in Food Processing Equipment. Cretel North
America, Inc. imports skinning equipment for fish, meat and poultry from Europe
with the goal of selling and distributing the machinery in North America.
Recently the company started exporting U.S.-made equipment to Europe.
Prior to his arrival in New Jersey, he attended elementary school through high
school in his hometown of Eeklo. Six of those years he attended a Catholic
Boarding school, where a great values system, strong ethics and morale
background were ingrained in him. He prides these until this day. After
graduating high school he started working at the car dealership his father
started while doing a 5 year co-op mechanical engineering program.
Under the auspice of his dad, Alexander learned the trade as a teen, by helping
in the business repairing, servicing and eventually selling cars. It did not
come to a surprise to anyone that he would one day follow his dad's footstep and
take over the reigns of the dealership. For eleven years he owned the business
until 1998, when he sold it to a colleague, preparing for the adventure and
opportunity of a lifetime. Moving to the U.S.A. was a dream come true.
The move from Europe to the U.S.A. was initiated by a job transfer for his wife
Karlien. Alexander married Karlien De Clercq in 1985 and they have 3 children:
Alexander Jr.(17), Aristo (16) and Lara (10). Karlien is a senior manager for a
leading investment bank on Wall Street.
Alexander's first experience with community service was his father becoming a
founding member of the local Kiwanis chapter in Eeklo. This Kiwanis club could
count on Alexander for all their community service and social projects.
In 1980 Alexander, 18 at the time, was asked to join the local community
Rotaract Club. Over the next 11 years he held every possible board position with
the exception of secretary and treasurer, ending his last year in Rotaract as
club president. Due to age restrictions he had to resign in 1991.
In 1999 he joined the Rotary Club of the Princeton Corridor. Served as its
president 2002-2003 and was asked on the board almost every year since joining.
Alexander earned two Paul Harris Fellow recognitions, one from the Princeton
Corridor club in 2002 and one from District 7510 in 2004. Presently on district
level he is DG Michael Hart's ADG for Area 8.
Alexander has a few hobbies: Cars, especially pre 1980 English cars, fishing
with sons and friends and skiing. Recently Alexander started experimenting with
golf, but it seems harder than expected.
