For John Shockley, what started out one summer day in 2011 as an unexpected telephone call from Hillsborough Rotarian Vince Lipani has turned into a passion to serve those in need. Mr. Lipani was looking to borrow equipment to repair a rain-soaked field for the Hillsborough Rotary Fair, and John responded not only with the needed equipment, but also with a level of commitment and dedication to the Rotary Mission that continues to this day.
The Hillsborough Rotary Club presented John with a Presidential Citation for his help with the 2011 Fair, and he joined the Club later that same year. Since that time, John has served as Club Secretary, President-Elect, President, and Assistant Governor, and is presently Lieutenant Governor and District Governor Nominee 2018-19. John has also assisted on two district conference committees and served as Sergeant-at-Arms for Past District Governors Tulsi Maharjan and Mel Kevoe. John has completed all Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) coursework, and has served as a facilitator for both RLI and President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) II. He is a member of the RLI faculty.
John was a former Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Life Scout with 18 Merit Badges. John has been a resident of Somerset County for over 55 years, and currently lives in Hillsborough Township with Linda, his wife of 41 years. Both John and Linda are Paul Harris Fellow recipients. They have two grown children, Jamie Lynn Brownlie and John III, both residents of Hillsborough.
After gradating high school, John entered the water and wastewater industry, attending numerous trade schools and apprenticing under licensed operators. He earned the top New Jersey licenses for wastewater treatment and collection system operations. John continued to receive technical training and received his licenses to operate water treatment and water distribution systems in NJ. John also holds a 100 gross ton Master’s License from the US Coast Guard.
John and Linda are self-employed and own 911 Carting and 911 Septic Pumping and Repair, both NJDEP-licensed companies for hauling solid and liquid waste.
In addition to his family and Rotary, John enjoys golf, motorcycling and driving Corvettes. When you can pull him away from Rotary, he embraces his passion for boating. Whenever possible, he and his wife Linda head to the Jersey shore to spend time on their boat, “Waste Knot.” Despite the getaway, he is always available to field phone calls, respond to emails, and direct information pertaining to important Rotary issues as he continues to align himself to the Rotary motto, “Service above Self.”
