The Rotary Club of Robbinsville/Hamilton joined with the Rotary Club of Campinas-Alvarda, Brazil to rescue and care for street children living in situations of ultimate risk. The children are now able to live in a rural center that provides a home, guidance, education and training in marketable job skills, enabling them to become contributing members of society.

The program provides a self-contained residential facility, complete with dormitories, cafeteria, classrooms, a working farm, an infirmary, and a recreational center. Most of the youth come to the program with little or no formal education. By the time they leave, they will have attained at least an 8th grade level of education and will have received extensive vocational training in a variety of technical fields, including auto mechanics, auto body and paint, civil construction, plumbing, carpentry, welding, graphic design, baking and nursing.

Thus far we have:

  • Traveled to Brazil on a fact finding mission to see the problem first-hand.

  • Secured a $30,000.00 Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation to purchase educational and transportation equipment

  • Working with the Rotary Club of Vitoria, Brazil, received a Rotary Foundation Health, Hunger and Humanities Grant of $485,000  to purchase supplies and equipment to begin another facility in Vitoria. This is the largest grant awarded at that time to a South American Country

  • Increased the awareness of the country of Brazil toward the plight of street children.

  • Assist in promoting literacy and education in other parts of the world as well as the United States.  We worked with a Rotary Club in Sri Lanka for a matching grant to assist in rebuilding a school destroyed by the tsunami  in that country.

  • Assist with education programs for District 7510.
